Lesson 5 - The Senses
Objective 1: Discuss the sense of touch and identify the various types of sensory receptors in the skin.
Objective 2: Explain the relationship between smell and taste. We live in a world of sensations. Ours senses are our link to experiencing the outside world, and we often take them for granted. The inputs we get from our senses are almost impossible to describe, and yet we use them every moment of the day. 5 minutes: At the Door Write answers to each of the following questions in your notes:
20 minutes: Check for Understanding Clicker quiz: Nervous System go over the quiz in class to check for understanding 10 minutes: Demonstration Have several volunteers try blindfolded taste-testing of different flavors of soda., Discuss the importance of the sensory organs working together. 40 minutes: Lab: Getting to the Point Students have been taught that the sensory receptors in the skin can detect four sensations; hot, cold, pressure, and pain. They learn that all other sensations are a combination of these different receptors working together. In this lab, students test different areas of their skin to see if sensory receptors in some areas of the body are more sensitive than those in other areas. They will use use toothpicks set at different distances apart to see which areas the receptors are closer together and therefore are more sensitive to touch. 10 minutes: Lab processing
